Intervertebral Disc Disease

Intervertebral discs are the cushions that serve as the spine’s shock absorbing system, which protect the vertebrae, brain, and nerves. The discs allow for some vertebral motion: extension and flexion. Individual disc movement is very limited; however more motion is possible when several discs combine forces.  Due to the limitations, patients with degenerative disc disease can be at risk for problems with their intervertebral discs, which may cause them to bulge or herniate.
