Michael H. Berkson, MD

An interest in the biomechanics and engineering has long intrigued me, as my specialty demands preciseness and in these same areas. While in high school and college, I participated on my schools’ swim teams. It was as a swimmer that my focus narrowed to injuries of the musculoskeletal system.

Following my undergraduate studies at Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri it was natural to follow my interests to a career in medicine. I earned my medical degree from Loyola University Stritch School of Medicine in Illinois, and during my subsequent post graduate internship at Rush Presbyterian St. Luke’s Medical Center in Chicago I most enjoyed the ability to correct and fix injuries to the limbs.

My commitment to specialize in orthopedics was solidified during my four years of orthopedic residency, also served at Rush Presbyterian St. Luke’s Medical Center. Following completion of my residency I founded Associates in Orthopaedic Surgery in Elgin, which became a part of OrthoIllinois in 2018. In addition to my medical practice I have also stayed actively involved at Sherman Hospital, both holding Secretary, Vice President, and President offices on the Medical Staff, and serving as Chief of Surgery.

In my practice I have a depth of experience in general orthopedics, sports medicine, arthroscopy of the shoulder and knee, minimally invasive hip and knee replacements, hip and knee joint revisions and reconstructions, and ACL reconstruction. But my special interest remains in providing care for traumatic injury and fractures.

In my experience as an orthopedic surgeon I still appreciate the trust patients place in me to help them return to function and daily activities. When patients return and share how my care has made a positive impact on their lives it is both deeply gratifying and inspiring.

I love what I do, it’s that simple.
