Larry Wellendorf, MD
With a family practice nurse as a mother, it’s possible that being in health care is just in his blood, but Dr. Larry Wellendorf has known since he was young that he wanted to be a doctor. That natural interest was encouraged by his father and further fueled by time spent as a boy with his mom at work watching the doctors in their small Iowa town near Des Moines. He was fascinated and amazed with the efficiency and interactions of the physicians at work and knew from the start he was most interested in primary and musculoskeletal care.
With a career path already in mind, Dr. Wellendorf attended the University of Iowa in Iowa City where he majored in biology with High Distinction and minored in chemistry. Upon graduation he remained at the University of Iowa at the College of Medicine where he earned his medical degree before moving to West Suburban Hospital Medical Center in Oak Park, Illinois to complete his three-year family practice residency program.
Dr. Wellendorf stayed in the Chicago area to begin his practice in 1996 as a family medicine physician. Since that time he has accumulated abundant experience in emergency, occupational, immediate care, and family practice medicine for area health systems. Dr. Wellendorf’s most recent positions prior to joining OrthoIllinois were held consecutively as Medical Director and Plant Physician for industrial and occupational medicine at the Chrysler Assembly Plant in Belvidere, Illinois and then as Medical Director, Immediate Care/Occupational and Employee Health Services/Health Promotion and Wellness for Northwest Community Healthcare based in Arlington Heights, Illinois.
As part of the provider team at OrthoIllinois’ walk in Injury Express, Dr. Wellendorf applies his extensive experience to the diagnosis and conservative treatment of patients with new work and sport injuries, as well as those with longer-term injuries and pain that lingers.
Getting to know his patients as individual people rather than just a patient is the commitment Dr. Wellendorf abides by. He strives to understand both a patient’s condition and how that injury or condition is impacting the patient’s activities and lifestyle with the goal of getting each one back to functional status as safely and rapidly as possible.
When he is not practicing medicine, Dr. Wellendorf enjoys watching and playing sports, coaching youth sports, and being outdoors in activities with his family.
