The Benefits

  • Customized Surgical Planning: 3D modeling allows for a personalized surgical approach to each patient’s needs.
  • Personalized adjustments: Enables your surgeon to personalize in real time the surgical plan and make micro adjustments to planned bone cuts to achieve a more precisely balanced knee.
  • Safety and precision: Provides your surgeon with guidance to remove only the damaged, arthritic portion of the bone, virtually eliminating a risk to surrounding healthy bone, ligaments, and other tissue.
  • Pin-Point Positioning: Allows for testing of the implant for size, position, and rotation before permanent implantation, resulting in a knee that moves with correct balance and a more natural feeling.

QUESTIONS AND MORE

A good candidate for robotic total knee replacement typically has severe knee pain and/or disability due to conditions such as osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, or a knee injury. It may be considered when other conservative treatments such as physical therapy, medication, or injections have not provided adequate relief.

The decision to undergo robotic total knee replacement will depend on several factors, including the patient’s age, health status, the severity of their knee condition, and the equipment available at the facility in which the procedure will take place.

Some specific factors that may make a patient a good candidate for robotic total knee replacement include:

  1. Advanced arthritis
  2. Age
  3. Health status
  4. Realistic expectations
  5. Active lifestyle

Ultimately, the decision to undergo robotic total knee replacement should be made in consultation with your Ortho Illinois orthopedic surgeon who can assess each patient’s individual situation and recommend the most appropriate treatment options for their needs.

OrthoIllinois utilizes multiple makes of robotic assisted technology at our OrthoMidwest Surgery Center and at our OrthoIllinois Surgery Center in Elgin. The technology used will be dependent on at which ambulatory surgery center or hospital facility the patient undergoes their procedure.

Studies indicate better short term clinical outcomes with robotic assisted total knee replacement when compared to conventional surgery.* However, there is no long term data at this time available to compare long term outcomes.  Further studies will need to be conducted as the use of robotic assisted technology continues.

It is important to note that robotic total knee replacement is not suitable for everyone.  Your Ortho Illinois orthopedic surgeon will determine whether it is a suitable option for your individual needs.
