Cort Lawton, MD

Cort Lawton, MD

Dr. Cort Lawton is a dedicated orthopedic surgeon practicing at OrthoIllinois, a division of OrthoMidwest, with a special focus on sports medicine. He brings a unique perspective to patient care, having experienced personal injuries himself during his formative years in Polo, Illinois, where he participated in wrestling and boxing. These experiences fostered his understanding of the frustrations and challenges faced by injured athletes and inspired his commitment to help others overcome similar obstacles.

Dr. Lawton’s interest in sports medicine and his passion for athletics remained steadfast throughout his academic and professional journey. He earned his medical degree from Rosalind Franklin University of Medicine and Sciences: Chicago Medical School, followed by an orthopedic surgery residency at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine. During his residency, Dr. Lawton gained valuable experience as a sports medicine physician in the Chicago area, including providing coverage for the Chicago Blackhawks NHL team, the NBA Combine, the NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball March Madness Tournament, NCAA Division I Wrestling Tournaments, and Chicago public high school and youth football games.

To further refine his expertise, Dr. Lawton completed a Sports Medicine Fellowship at the prestigious Hospital for Special Surgery in New York City. This subspecialty training allowed him to concentrate on arthroscopic and open surgical procedures for injuries to the hip, knee, and shoulder. He also expanded his clinical experience by working with professional teams such as the New York Rangers (NHL), New York Liberty (WNBA), New York Guardians (XFL professional football), Rugby United New York (professional rugby), and the UFC.

At OrthoIllinois, Dr. Lawton’s practice centers on treating youth and adult injuries to the hip, knee, and shoulder, with a particular interest in arthroscopic procedures for the hip and innovative treatment techniques such as the BEAR Implant ACL restoration. His care philosophy is shaped by his own athletic background and the exemplary sports medicine physicians who influenced his career. Dr. Lawton is committed to supporting his patients’ return to competition, resumption of athletic activities, or recovery from disabilities, always striving to be a steadfast advocate in their journey to recovery.

Outside of his medical practice, Dr. Lawton remains active by golfing, wrestling, boxing, fishing, and spending quality time with his family.
