Rx Request & Policy

Rx Request & Policy

To request a refill, please make your request at the pharmacy at which the prescription was initially filled.

To Our Patients:

If you are provided with a prescription as part of your treatment, it is important to understand our policy regarding refills, how to request a refill if necessary, and what you can expect for how your request will be processed by us. Please read the policies and notifications below and ask your nurse for clarification of any points you may not understand.

  • If you need a refill, make your request at the pharmacy at which the prescription was initially filled. Your pharmacist will then contact us electronically for refill approval. If you are here for a regular or follow-up appointment, you may make your refill request during your appointment to save time.
  • Refill requests should be made prior to 3:00 pm, Monday thru Thursday and Noon on Friday. We do not process refill requests after these times.
  • Due to the availability of your physician, your refill request may take up to three business days to be processed. Please check your prescription levels and make your request prior to running out of medication or the start of a weekend to ensure you have adequate medication supplies to last until your refill is processed. When weekends and/or holidays are involved, this could be a wait of four to five days.
  • In compliance with an amendment to the Illinois Controlled Substance Act, patients requesting a refill of an HCP (narcotic pain relievers) must follow the procedures above (make your refill request through your pharmacy), but will be required to come to your physician’s office to pick up a new written prescription if the request is approved.  Please see “Requesting a Refill of a Schedule II Drug” below.

***IMPORTANT CHANGE EFFECTIVE 01.01.2018***

Due to the high number of prescription drug-related deaths, documentation and rules surrounding these prescriptions are closely monitored by Ortho Illinois and by state and federal agencies.  As a result of Illinois State Law, WE MONITOR NARCOTIC PRESCRIPTION REFILLS THROUGH THE ILLINOIS PRESCRIPTION MONITORING PROGRAM.  This allows us to see the prescriptions you fill from all pharmacies and all providers.

Requesting a Refill of a Schedule II Drug

DEA regulations prohibit refill orders of Hydrocodone combination products (HCPs) or other Schedule II-classified drugs after the initial written presciption.

Patients needing additional narcotic pain relievers such as Norco, Vicodin, and Lortab at the conclusion of their initial prescription must now receive a NEW prescription from their physician to continue the drug. These new prescriptions must be picked up in person from your physician’s office. Please follow the below procedures if you need to request an additional supply for prescriptions classified as Schedule II drugs:

  1. MAKE YOUR REQUEST BY CONTACTING THE PHARMACY AT WHICH THE PRESCRIPTION WAS INITIALLY FILLED.  If you are at the clinic for a regular or follow-up appointment, you may make your request during your appointment to save time.
  2. Prescription requests should be made prior to 3:00 pm, Monday thru Thursday and Noon on Friday. We do not process refill requests after these times. Rheumatology patients may be required to make an appointment before refill requests are filled.
  3. Due to the availability of your physician, your refill request may take up to three business days to be processed. Please check your prescription levels and make your request prior to running out of medication or the start of a weekend to ensure you have adequate medication supplies to last until your new prescription is processed. When weekends and/or holidays are involved, this could be a wait of four to five days.
  4. When your request is processed, you will be notified by a member of your physician’s staff that your new prescription is ready to be picked up at the registration desk of the clinic.  The new prescription must be picked up in person by you or you may notify your physician’s staff of the name of a designated person you wish to pick up the prescription on your behalf.

**Anyone picking up a prescription, including you, must
be 18 years of age or older AND present a photo ID. **
