Hip Replacement
Hip pain caused by arthritis, injury or a previous implant can make everyday movement difficult. Ortho Illinois offers several hip replacement and resurfacing options designed to relieve pain, improve mobility and help patients return to the activities they enjoy. Your orthopedic surgeon will recommend an approach based on your health, anatomy and lifestyle.
Birmingham Hip Resurfacing preserves more of the natural thighbone than a traditional hip replacement. It may be an option for certain younger, active patients with strong bone quality. Because the implant uses metal-on-metal components, careful patient selection and a discussion of its specific risks are important.
The direct anterior approach allows the surgeon to reach the hip joint from the front of the body, working between muscles rather than detaching them from the bone. For appropriate patients, this muscle-sparing technique may support earlier mobility and a smoother initial recovery.
The mini-posterior approach accesses the hip through a smaller incision at the back of the joint while limiting disruption to surrounding tissue. It provides the surgeon with excellent access to the hip and may help support recovery after surgery.
Outpatient total hip replacement allows eligible patients to return home on the day of surgery. Careful screening, modern anesthesia, pain-management techniques and early physical therapy help make same-day recovery possible for appropriately selected patients.
Revision hip replacement replaces or repairs parts of an existing hip implant that have become worn, loose, infected, unstable or damaged. Because revision surgery can be more complex than an initial replacement, treatment is carefully planned for each patient.
Total hip replacement removes the damaged portions of the hip joint and replaces them with durable artificial components. The procedure can reduce pain and restore function for patients whose symptoms have not improved with nonsurgical treatment.
