Spine Disorders

Spine Anatomy

There are 33 individual bones in the spinal column, and 23 discs with one per each pair of vertebrae. 6 in the neck, 12 in the middle of the back, and 5 in the lumbar area. They are numbered based on their location. The spinal cord is housed in the vertebral column. The nerve root is the segment of the spinal nerve that emerges from the spinal cord to innervate parts of the body.

Intervertebral discs are pads of cartilage structurally similar to a jelly-filled donut. Each disc has a tough outer capsule that distributes pressure to prevent damage to the vertebrae. The nucleus or inner jelly-like center acts as a shock absorber to keep the vertebrae apart and absorb impact from body movements.
