Michael Chmell, MD
Although some may consider me a man of few words, I like to let my patients do all the talking. I was always pretty quiet as a kid. I guess I was just too busy figuring out ways to fix things, so I didn’t seem to talk much. Just my nature. I really like solving problems and getting things to work like they were supposed to.
So naturally I thought something like engineering would probably be the most logical career for me to pursue, until my older brother graduated from medical school. He was going to be an orthopedic surgeon. I didn’t know what that meant, but he told me he was going to help fix people. Right then, I knew exactly what I wanted to do with my life! So I studied hard all through high school and college, and then medical school. To specialize my skill, I spent an extra year after my residency in fellowship training for joint replacement at Harvard University. Then, finally, I started practicing as an orthopedic surgeon, as well.
Today, I treat primarily knee patients here at Ortho Illinois. It gives me a great deal of satisfaction knowing that I’ve helped someone return to a healthy, normal and active lifestyle. Helping people is just about the most rewarding thing I can think of. What more can I say?

Was very happy with my appointment.
Dr Chmell had replaced my left knee previously. He is now treating my right knee.
Very helpful and explained the x rays to me and answered my questions.
Love Dr, Chmell.
Dr. Chmell is terrific.
My appointment was for the results of an MRI. Was told I needed surgery. Had three various medical professionals (P.A., N.P, etc) to explain everything prior to Dr. Chmell appearance. Everything was handled exceptionally efficiently, and patiently (I always question everything). They were friendly and concerned. Outstanding patient care!
Dr. Chmell was very good.
Always excellent care from Dr. Chmell.
Dr Chmell ordered a precautionary ultrasound based on my symptoms which turned out to discover a blood clot in my leg. His foresight and intuitive reaction helped discover a serious medical issue which I didn't know about. Meghan was extremely helpful as well. Very professional and caring.
