Ride Smart, Stay Safe: A Look at E-Scooter and E-Bike Injuries

Posted on: September 4th, 2026 by Dr. Pradeep N. Raju

You’ve seen them zipping down sidewalks, riding alongside cars in the street, and zooming by on the recreational trails. E-scooters and e-bikes have become one of the most popular ways to get around. They’re fun, fast, and convenient, but also one of the fastest growing causes of orthopedic injuries.

If you’re a thrill seeker and plan to ride an e-bike or scooter, here’s what you need to know to stay safe and off the exam table.

Why E-Bikes and E-Scooters Lead to Serious Injuries

It’s tempting to think of these as just faster versions of a regular bike or scooter, but that’s not the case. A few key differences make them riskier:

  • Higher speeds: Many e-bikes and e-scooters can hit 20 mph or more. That’s fast enough that a fall creates real trauma-level impact.
  • More weight: E-bikes are heavier than standard bikes, which makes them harder for inexperienced or younger riders to control, especially when braking or turning suddenly.
  • Throttle power: Some models don’t require pedaling at all. A rider can go from a stop to full speed with the twist of a throttle, leaving little room for error.

That combination of speed, weight, and inexperience shows up directly in what we see at OrthoIllinois. We routinely treat fractures of the wrist, forearm, collarbone, and ankle, along with shoulder and elbow injuries like dislocations and separations. A curb caught wrong, a sudden stop, an unexpected pothole: at these speeds, a simple spill often turns into something that needs surgery or months of rehab.

When You Need Orthopedic Care

If you or your child is involved in an e-scooter or e-bike accident, watch closely for:

  • Swelling or bruising that worsens quickly
  • Numbness, tingling, or a cold, pale extremity
  • Inability to bear weight, grip, or move a joint through its normal range
  • Tenderness to the touch directly over a bone

Any of these warrants a same-day evaluation with an orthopedic provider. And if there’s been any head impact, confusion, headache, or dizziness, that needs to be checked immediately, too, but don’t let a “clean” head check delay evaluation of the arm, wrist, or leg that’s actually hurting. Fractures and joint injuries can be easy to underestimate at the moment, and delaying care can turn a simple fracture into one that requires surgery.
