Understanding Joint Pain and When You Should See a Specialist

What Everyday Aches Say About Your Joints

The small moments that can reveal a shoulder, hip, or knee problem

Ever notice a little ache in your shoulder when you reach for something up high? Or a stiff knee when you get up from the couch? It’s easy to shrug them off. Maybe you slept funny, had a busy week, or figure it’s just part of getting older. Those everyday aches could be just that, or they could be the first signs of a bigger issue – joint pain. Most joint issues don’t start with a big injury; they show up quietly, during the moments you barely think about. And if the same simple move keeps hurting, it could be an early sign that your joint needs some care.

Here’s a look at shoulder, hip and knee aches, plus how to know when it’s time to see a specialist.

Shoulders

Your shoulder is the most flexible joint in your body, which also makes it easy to irritate. Many people first notice a problem when reaching overhead to a cabinet, reaching behind them to grab something from the back seat, or putting on a jacket.

Another common clue happens at night. If your shoulder aches when you lie on that side, or the pain wakes you up, the tendons around the joint, called the rotator cuff, may be irritated or injured. Arthritis can cause similar aches, along with stiffness that makes it harder to raise your arm.

Hips

Hip problems often show up when bending down and doing things like putting on your socks and shoes, getting in and out of the car, or standing up from a low couch can all become harder when the hip joint is stiff or worn.

Where you feel the pain matters too. Hip arthritis is often felt in the groin or front of the thigh, not just the side of the hip. Pain on the outside of the hip, especially when lying on that side, can point to irritated tendons or a swollen fluid sac called a bursa.

Knees

Knees tend to complain after you’ve been still. If your knee feels stiff or achy when you stand up after a long drive, a movie, or a day at your desk, the cartilage behind the kneecap or arthritis may be the cause.

Kneeling to garden or clean can also bring on pain. And if your knee catches, locks or gives out when you pivot or turn quickly, a cartilage or ligament injury may be to blame.

Why Small Aches Matter

It’s tempting to wait for pain to get worse before doing anything about it. But everyday aches are often your best early warning. Joint problems aren’t just for older adults, either. Nearly 60% of U.S. adults with arthritis are of working age, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

The earlier the cause of your pain is found, the more treatment options you’re likely to have. Many joint problems improve with physical therapy, activity changes, bracing or injections, without surgery.

When to See a Specialist for Joint Pain

It’s a good idea to see an orthopedic specialist if:

  • Your pain lasts longer than two weeks
  • The same simple motion keeps causing pain
  • Pain wakes you up at night
  • You’ve started avoiding activities you enjoy

Get care the same day if a joint suddenly becomes hot, red, and swollen, especially with a fever, or if you can’t put weight on it after an injury. For injuries like sprains and possible broken bones, OrthoIllinois Injury Express offers walk-in care. Call (779) 771-7000.

Your Joint Pain Questions, Answered

Is joint pain always a sign of arthritis?

No. Arthritis is a common cause, but joint pain can also come from injuries, overuse, or irritated tendons. A specialist can help pinpoint the cause.

Do I need a referral to see an orthopedic specialist?

It depends on your insurance. Some plans require a referral from your primary care doctor, and others don’t. Check with your insurance company or call OrthoIllinois to find out.

Get Back to Moving Without Thinking About It

The best sign that your joints are healthy is that you don’t notice them at all. If tying your shoes, reaching for a shelf, or standing up from your chair has started to feel like a chore, the orthopedic specialists at OrthoIllinois can help you find the cause and get back to moving with ease.
